Psybreaks is a form of electronic music that developed as a fusion of Psytrance and Breakbeat in the mid 2000s, splicing Breakbeat basslines and rhythms into otherwise heavily Psytrance-influenced tracks. Currently (Feb 2007) many Psybreaks producers tour on the main Breakbeat and (more commonly) Psytrance scenes, as the genre is still sufficiently new to not have developed its own independent scene yet. Some view Psybreaks as being simply another addition to the existing Psytrance "stable", and so it is possible that Psybreaks will become one of many sub-genres of Psytrance, rather than a separate genre in its own right. It has been suggested that Electronica be merged into this article or section. ...

Mood Deluxe released the psybreaks album The Tangent Universe in 2006 and was considered by many to be be one of the first proper psybreaks albums follwong Seb Taylors earlier work as Digitalis. Mood Deluxe is the work of Cameron Leonard-Schroff (also of psy dubstep/ dub act NSE) who names Cosmisis, Deviant Species, Digitalis, The Prodigy and Chris Carter as influencing the Mood Deluxe sound. Mood Deluxe psybreaks sound is closer to psytrance than it is breaks, usually using psytrance tempos and rolling 16th basslines, combining superheavy and chunky breakbeats with futuristic sound design and psytrance arrangements. There is less emphasis on "the drop" as in nu skool breaks and more on the progressive arrangement and detailed layering on show. Far Too Loud, winners of best single award at the Breakspoll Awards at Fabric have released numerous records with breaks labels and have developed a style of hard, funky bassline breaks with a a twisted psychedlic influence. Their remix of Get Shift has been recognised as a classic fusion of nu skool b-line funk and acidic madness. They also host a web radio show on Breaks FM. |
