Ptolemais is the Ancient name for several cities in the Mediterranean region:

  • Ptolemais (Cyrenaica), a city in the Pentapolis of Cyrenaica;
  • Ptolemais Ace (modern Akko), a city in the province of Syria;
  • Ptolemais Hermiou, a city in Egypt; and
  • Ptolemais Theron, a city founded on the coast of the Red Sea.

The port city of Ptolemais was located on a promontory at the northern end of the bay across from Mount Carmel.
Under the Romans the natural harbor in the southern part of the city was improved and a breakwater was constructed, transforming it the main port on the eastern Mediterranean coast.
