Fitch IBCA Ratings - Press Releases - Ratings For Malaysia's Public Bank Affirmed By Fitch IBCA (559 words)
Public Bank's recent announcement of a MYR262.9 mln loss at Public Securities, a 50.4% owned subsidiary, along with its plan to recapitalise Public Securities after acquiring the subsidiary's entire share capital, had prompted the agency to review its Individual rating.
Public Bank continues to be in a much healthier position than its peers, its gross non-performing loans at June 1998 being 4.9% of gross loans, half the system average; loan loss reserves covered 92% of those loans.
Yet the agency did warn that prospects for the banking sector as a whole remain poor and there is some downside risk for Public Bank, whose performance may deteriorate beyond the agency's current expectations, even though it does not believe the bank's solvency would be called into question.
