The Koklass is a species of the Pheasant family, Phasianidae, and is the only species in the genus Pucrasia. There are nine subspecies.

Tragopaninae is a single genus that consists of the five Tragopan species and Argusianinae is made up of the three genera, Polyplectron (Peacock Pheasants), Rheinartia (Crested Argus), and Argusianus (Great Argus).
This is however a mainly arbitrary classification used to group together genera that are similar in body form and behavior.
Pucrasia is a highly distinctive genus whose placement remains unresolved.
