The Puerto Rican Socialist Party -- or Partido Socialista Puertorriqueño (PSP for its abbreviation in Spanish) -- was a Puerto Ricanpolitical party that existed from the 1971 to 1993 and advocated independence and a socialistgovernment for Puerto Rico. The party was founded at the 8th General Assembly of the Pro Independence Movement (Movimiento Pro Independencia or MPI) in November 28, 1971. MPI was founded in January 11, 1959 in Mayagüez, Puerto Rico.
Under Coll y Cuchi's presidency, the party was able to convince the PuertoRican Legislature Assembly to approve an act that would permit the transfer of the mortal remains of PuertoRican patriot Ramon Emeterio Betances from Paris, France to Puerto Rico.
Betance's remains arrived in San Juan, Puerto Rico on August 5, 1920 and a funeral caravan organized by the Nationalist Party transferred the remains from the capital to the town of Cabo Rojo where he was laid to rest.
The New York Junta (board)[1] is an autonomous organ of the party that recognizes and is recognized by the National Junta in Puerto Rico.
The PuertoRican Independence Party (Partido Independentista Puertorriqueño (PIP) in Spanish) is a PuertoRican political party that campaigns for the independence of Puerto Rico from the United States.
The party began as the electoral wing of the PuertoRican pro-independence movement.
During the 2004 elections, the PIP was in serious danger of disappearing, obtaining only 2.4% of the popular vote (According to PuertoRican electoral laws, a party that receives less that 3% of the vote is considered eradicated).
