Apulia is a region of Italy (called Puglia in Italian), bordering on Molise to the north-west, Campania to the south-west, Basilicata to the south, the Adriatic Sea to the east and the Ionian Sea to the south-east. It is close to Albania, which is 80 km across the Adriatic. The region covers 19,223 kmē and has a population of 4.02 million.
The region encompasses the "heel" of Italy, the peninsula known as Salento or Terra di Lecce.
Puglia has been chosen due to its position on the edge of "Fortress Europe" (its territory is characterized by a strong militarization and the presence of administrative detention centres) and because of the presence of thousands of migrants who work under conditions of total exploitation, especially in the agricultural sector.
In the area where we intend to locate the camp (Frassanito, Puglia) there are numerous centres for the administrative detention of migrants and, during the summer, the region is characterized by the presence of many migrants working in agriculture.
It is important to remember that during the last few years the number of legal admittances to work in Southern Italy has been ridiculously low due the Italian government's preference for an agricultural development based on the exploitation of clandestine migrants and fl-market work.
Digital Puglia is a new project, emphasizing not only retrieval of data to the client's workstation, but also customized processing of the data.
It may be that the data is too large for downloading to be practical, or the client may not have the relevant processing software.
In the Digital Puglia project, we will concentrate on multitemporal imaging, where the color channels of an image represent the surface of the Earth at different times, rather than different wavelengths or polarizations.
