Encyclopedia > Pullulan

Pullulan is a polysaccharide polymer consisting of maltotriose units, also known as α-1,4- ;α-1,6-glucan. Three glucose units in maltotriose are connected by an α-1,4 glycosidic bond, whereas consequtive maltotriose units are connected to each other by an α-1,6 glycosidic bond. Pullulan is produced from starch by the yeast Aureobasidium pullulans. Polysaccharides (sometimes called glycans) are relatively complex carbohydrates. ... A polymer is a generic term used to describe a substantially long molecule. ... A space-filling model of glucose Glucose, a simple monosaccharide sugar, is one of the most important carbohydrates and is used as a source of energy in animals and plants. ... A glycosidic bond is formed between a hemiacetal group of a sugar molecule (such as glucose) and an alcohol functional group to form an acetal. ... Starch is a complex carbohydrate which is insoluble in water. ... Saccharomyces cerevisiae is a yeast used in both baking and brewing. ...

As an edible, mostly tasteless polymer, the chief commercial use of pullulan is in the manufacture of edible films that are used in various breath freshener or oral hygiene products such as Listerine™ Cool Mint PocketPaks™. Oral hygiene is keeping the mouth clean. ... Listerine is a brand name for antiseptic mouthwash, named after Joseph Lister (father of modern antiseptics). ... Listerine PocketPaks are small rectangular (approximately on the same order of magnitude of size as a U.S. quarter) packages containing thin square strips that provide the same clean feeling as rinsing with Listerine mouthwash. ...

Patent 4029616: Polymer composition of ethylenic compounds and pullulan (2722 words)
A polymer composition comprising pullulan and an ethylenic compound is obtained by polymerizing the ethylenic compound in the presence of pullulan and in the presence or absence of a solvent and a catalyst.
Pullulan is such a high molecular weight linear polymer that units of maltotriose, which is a trimer of glucose, have been repeatedly bonded through.alpha.-1,6 linkages which are different from those of said trimer, and has the molecular structure represented by the formula, ##STR1## wherein n is an integer of 20 to 10,000.
According to the present invention, the polymerization of an ethylenic compound in the presence of pullulan is not particularly restricted in procedure, and may be carried out in the presence or absence of a solvent and a catalyst.
