Purley was the son of fishmonger Charles Purley, who made a fortune out of refrigerators built by his Longford Engineering Company (LEC).
Purley was subjected to the highest G-force ever survived by a human being - 179.8G - when the car went from 108mph to zero in just over half a metre.

Purley Cross roundabout connects routes leading east to East Grinstead and Eastbourne (the A22), west to Epsom and Kingston, south to Redhill and Brighton (the A23), and north to Croydon and London.
Purley was named in 2003 as the wealthiest area of suburban London, mainly due to the presence of the famous Webb Estate in West Purley.
