Today it is a noted tourist destination. As of January, 2004, tourists are charged 110 RMB for an entry ticket upon disembarkation at the island's port. A number of hotels and settlements are dotted around the island.
History
In the past, Japanese troops were stationed on the island.
Around 1612, the 20 year old future Chan-master Yinyuan Longqi arrived at Putuo Shan whilst looking for his father, who had disappeared fifteen years earlier. He served tea to the monks.

Putuoshan (Putuo Mountain) is located on one of the Zhoushan Islands in eastern Zhejiang Province, and has an area of 12.5 square kilometres, with mountain ranges in the northwest and beaches in the southeast.
Putuoshan is noted for its rough terrain and exquisite landscapes.
The lore surrounding Putuoshan island recounts numerous appearances and miracles performed by Kuan Yin, who, it is believed, reveals herself to the faithful in a certain cave on the island.
