Qingxi has a population of approximately 1 million people, 70,000 of which are local. Many of the people come to the town from rural areas to work. The city is situated in a somewhat mountainous region. The town center is the site of a lively overnight vegetable market. Downtown businesses include many retail clothing and department stores, and includes the likes of McDonald's, KFC, and several western style restaurants. Recent new additions in the city include a high-rise 5-star western style hotel and several new supermarkets.
