 THE PARISH CHURCH OF QRENDI

The village of Qrendi, situated in the south of Malta, is a renowned village in the history of Malta One can mention the Neolithic temples of Hagar Qim and Imnajdra, Guarena Palace, Maqluba and the Octagonal tower. There are also some other interesting places, such as, the six historic chapels dedicated to St. Matthew, St. Anne, Our Lady of Grace, Oar Saviour, Our Lady of Mercy and St. Catherine. Another historic and interesting place in this village is the Parish church, dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady.

Up to the 15th century the village of Qrendi formed part of the parish of Zurrieq. In the year 1618, the Maltese Bishop Baldassare Cagliares declared Qrendi as a separate parish. The construction of the present church started in 1685, when Fr. Domenic Formosa was the parish priest, and was completed in 1712. the plan of this new church was the work of the distinguished Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafa’. It has a cruciform style with a magnificent dome and two bell towers.

On the right tower we find four bells, two were made by the brothers Francesco and Joachim Trigance, one in 1788 and another in 1791. The third bell was made in 1663 by Antonio Guierrero and was imported from Sicily while the fourth bell was made in 1852. The left tower was completed in 1747.

On entering the church one is touched by its original and elegant architecture, adorned with a number of pillars and also various magnificent works of art by different renowned artists.

The two lateral transepts have simple prospectives but the altars here and in the main transept are adorned with very fine prospective and a baroque style sculpture.

 CHOIR

The first thing we admire in this choir is the titular painting. A magnificent work by the famous Maltese artist Guseppe Cali’ in 1917. This painting figures Our Lady’s assumption in heaven surrounded with a number of angels. In the lower part of the painting we can see some of the apostles around the empty grave. This painting was commissioned by Fr. Francis Bugeja and was put in place of another painting which now hangs in the sacristy.

On the altar beneath this painting we come across two interesting works of art. One is a small statue of a very define work in marble and is of a foreign artist. Beneath the altar we have the relique of St. Celestino which ws brought over from Rome on the 18th September 1842 by Fr Celestino Camilleri. The place here is adorned with the choir furniture which is believed to be of the 18th century as can be indicated by the coat of arms of Bishop Paolo Alpheran de Bussan on the top.

The 18th century pipe organ found here, was built in Naples in 1778 by Severino. This organ was restored to its originality by Mr. Robert Buhagiar in 2001.

Another ornament here is this very rare and marvelous lectern. It is made of mahogany with fine inlaid work. This masterpiece is the work of Emmanuel Buhagiar.

The main painting on the ceiling in the choir was made by the Gozitan artist Paul Camilleri Cauchi and represents the coronation of Our lady.

 PRESBYTERY AND MAIN ALTAR

As we come to the presbytery we see other paintings on the main pillars under the dome. St. Peter and St. Paul, the work of the Gozitan artist, Paul Camilleri Cauchi in 1972. On the other two opposite pillars we can see a painting representin Faith by Guseppe Calleja.

Other four paintings on top of the main pillars represent four biblical figures of Deborah – Abigail – Rachele – Ruth.

Another old piece of art is the beautiful pulpit. The stairs that lead to it are hidden in the thick walls of the church.

 DOME

The magnificent dome adorned with beautiful paintings is divided into eight parts each of which represent Our Lady under different titles. One can appreciate the fine work of sculptured decorations around these paintings made by Angelo Agiius, an artist from Qrendi.

 RIGHT TRANSEPT

The right transept is dedicated to the Agony of Our Lord. The main painting on this altar seems to be a local piece of art of an unknown artist. The cross here dominates this painting. On the lower part of the altar we have a painting of Our Lady of Lourdes which is connected to the confraternity founded by the Parish Priest Fr. Peter Paul Xuereb after the apparitions of Our Lady in Lourdes in 1858.

Another altar in this transept is dedicated to Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit. The painting here is a beauty in itself but unfortunately its artist is unknown. This altar is adorned with a fine prospective with a baroque style sculpture of the 18 century.

On the main door in this transept we see a painting showing the whipping of Our Lord. This seems to be a painting of the Caravaggio era (school). The main painting on the ceiling shows Our Lady holding the dead body of her son, Jesus.

 LEFT TRANSEPT

The left transept is dedicated to Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, also with a connection to the confraternity founded in this village in 1619 The painting of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary on this altar is the work of the 18th century Maltese artist Gannikol Buhagiar.

The other altar here is dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The painting is the work of the French artist Enrico Regnaud. The baroque style prospective is adorned with angels.

On the main door in this transept we have an old painting representing the Escape to Eygpt. This is a very good copy of the original painting by Alessandro Turchi.

The painting on the ceiling shows the episode of Pentecost, the descent of the Holy Spirit in the presence of Our Lady.

 MAIN TRANSEPT

The first thing that we notice in this transept is the marble floor of this church. This was designed by Emmanuel Buhagiar and imported from Italy. It was laid by the Italian craftsman, Edgardo Lombardi and inaugurated on the feast of Corpus Christi in 1955.

In this transept we have four lateral altars: (a) Altar dedicated to Our Lady of Consolation. The main painting is the work of Ramiro Cali’, son of Guseppe Cali’, and was commissioned by Fr. John Callus. This is also connected to the confraternity of Our Lady of Consolation founded in this village in 1736. the painting on the lower part of the altar shows St. Joseph.

(b) Altar dedicated to St. Stephen. The painting is the work of Ste4fano Erardin in 1677 and shows the two archangels, St. Michael and St. Gabriel with St. Stephen, St. Anne and St. Rosa of Lima.

(c) Altar dedicated to Our Lady of Conception. The painting on this altar is a very interesting piece of art. It shows Our Lady of Conception with St. Roque and St. Rosalia. This is also the work of Stefano Erardi and was made to commemorate the end of the plague in 1676.

(d) Altar adorned with one of the best paintings in this church, the work of Francesco Zahra. The painting figures a number of saints: St. John the baptist, St. John the evangelist, St. Paul, St. Catherine, St. Lucia and St. Nicholas. The highly defined prospective around this painting gives a greater dimension to this altar.

The marble baptistery, which is near the main door, was built in 1929 and commissioned by the Callus Family from Qrendi.

In this transept we also see four beautiful statues: The Assumption of Our Lady, the titular statue is the work of the Maltese artist Antonio Chircop. This statue, made in 1840, is carved in wood and adorned with beautiful angels.

Another beautiful statue, the work of Carlo Darmanin in 1878 is of Our Lady of Lourdes. This statue was made 20 years after the apparitions of Our Lady in the village of Lourdes in France.

Our Lady of Consolation, the work of Carlo Darmanin was commissioned by Fr. John Callus.

Our Lady of Sorrows is the work of the Gozitan artist Wistin Camilleri in 1972.

Besides these we can admire the beautiful paintings in this transept all of which are the work of the Gozitan artist, Paul Camilleri Cauchi. On the main entrance we can see the magnificent representation of a part of the Maltese history when on the 15th August 1942, the severely damaged tanker Ohio managed to reach Malta and gave a new hope to the Maltese during world war 2. this painting figures Our Lady protecting the remaining damaged ships which managed to enter Malta despite the heavy enemy attacks.

Just beneath we have two other paintings, one shows Moses crossing the red sea and the other shows the baptism of Christ.

The paintings on the ceiling here represent three episodes in the life of Our Lady. The first painting represent the birth of Jesus Christ in Betlehem. The second shows the finding of Jesus in the Temple. The third shows the first miracle of Jesus at the marriage of Cana.

Other beautiful paintings here represent biblical prophets and other famous figures all adorned with fine sculpture work by Angelo Agius, a renowned sculpture from Qrendi.

 MAIN SACRISTY

This is one to two sacristies in this church. In here we can admire a number of fine paintings connected to this church. The old titular painting representing the Assumption of Our Lady in Heaven. It is the work of Rocco Buhagiar, one of the best Maltese artists of the late 18th century.

Here we also find another fine painting figuring the Assumption. It is of an unknown artist of the late 16th century and is adorned with fine sculpture around it.

On each side of this painting there are two other paintings figuring members of the Order of the Knights of Malta. These are attributed to Bartolomeo Garagona around 1620. the left shows Gorlando de Alemagne and the right Sta. Toscana.

We also find a portrait of Fr. Antonio Mizzi who served as parish priest in this village for 49 years, between 1755 and 1804.

Other interesting paintings represent St. Nicholas. This is painted on wood and until some years ago it was kept in the chapel of the old cemetery of the village. The other is the beautiful painting of Our Lady of Lourdes. Two other paintings by Francesco Zahra show St. Aloysiius Consaga and another represents Our Lady of Light.

Here we also have the statue of Our Lady of the Holy Rosary, the work of Mallia in the early years of the 20th century. This statue is connected to the confraternity of the Holy Rosary founded in Qrendi in 1619.

Amongst other ornaments we find these two wooden candlesticks and the commemoration stone of the consecration of this church by Bishop Labini in 1782.

From the sacristy we move to a small chapel on the side in which we find some fine works of art:- A 16th century statue of Our Lady of Conception carved in wood and brought to Qrendi from Cospicua by parish priest Antonio Mizzi. This statue used to be taken out in procession on the feast of the Assumption at that time. Two other small paintings represent St. Philip neri by Guseppe Calleja and St. Rosa whose artist is unknown.

 SECOND SACRISTY

The other sacristy is usually used by the confraternities. Here we find the picture of Fr. Celestino Camilleri, the priest who brought the saintly relic of St. Celestino and who also commissioned the paving of the presbytery in 1882 and the building of this sacristy. Here we also find the statue of St. Philip Neri, a fine work by Carlo Darmanin in 1878 and commissioned by Philip Psaila.
