Quartzsite is a town located in La Paz County, Arizona. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 3,354.


Quartzsite is the final resting place of Hi Jolly (Hadji Ali), a Syrian camel driver who took part in the experimental US Camel Corps.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 94.0 km˛ (36.3 mi˛). 94.0 km˛ (36.3 mi˛) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,354 people, 1,850 households, and 1,176 families residing in the town. The population density is 35.7/km˛ (92.4/mi˛). There are 3,186 housing units at an average density of 33.9/km˛ (87.8/mi˛). The racial makeup of the town is 94.48% White, 0.24% Black or African American, 1.16% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 2.59% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. 5.04% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,850 households out of which 5.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.0% are married couples living together, 2.9% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% are non-families. 31.5% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.81 and the average family size is 2.18.


In the town the population is spread out with 5.7% under the age of 18, 1.8% from 18 to 24, 7.7% from 25 to 44, 29.9% from 45 to 64, and 54.9% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 66 years. For every 100 females there are 102.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.9 males.


The median income for a household in the town is $23,053, and the median income for a family is $26,382. Males have a median income of $20,313 versus $16,080 for females. The per capita income for the town is $15,889. 13.5% of the population and 7.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.3% of those under the age of 18 and 10.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Named for the wide variety of quartz crystals found in the surrounding desert, Quartzsite plays host to world famous gem shows, the largest swap meet in the world, RV parks with full hookups or dry camping, and thousands of acres of State and Federal land to accommodate the camper, prospector, hiker, and ATV enthusiast.
By far Quartzsite's biggest attraction is the grave of Hi Jolly, the Arab camel driver who came to the US from his native Syria during the 1850's with dozens of North African camels.
Quartzsite is an old west community with a rich and varied past and should prove to be a welcome afternoon adventure or weekend getaway.
