Encyclopedia > Queen Boudicca

Queen Boudicca (fl. mid-1st century CE). Also spelled Boadicea, Boudicca was a Briton tribal leader of the Iceni (in the Norfolk area of England) who rebelled against the Roman legions approximately 60 AD with particular savagery and bloodshed. The destruction of Londondinium, the final pitched battle, and subsequent Roman retaliation are estimated to have caused more than 100,000 casualties and triggered mass starvations among families of the farmers who never returned to their fields.
