This application was originally developed to support Apple's internal testing of QuickTime 1.0 and was then known as MoviePlayer. It was released as part of the QuickTime installation to provide a simple movie playback application for users. Over time the player grew in sophistication and scope. QuickTime 4.1, released at the beginning of 2000, added support for movie files larger than 2 gigabytes on Mac OS 9 and later, and dropped support for 68K Macs.
