He fought as a member of the Royal Flying Corps in the First World War. He learned to fly and was awarded Royal Aero Club Certificate No 3949 on 30 March 1916. Flying in Nieuports and Sopwith Camels he claimed 12 victories in 1917 and 1918. He served in No. 1 Squadron RFC before being posted back to Britain. In 1918 he became commander of the newly formed No. 151 Squadron RAF. This was a night fighter squardron equipped with specially modified Sopwith Camels.
