Qurghonteppa (formerly known as Kurgan-Tyube, from the Persian word گرگان تپه meaning "Hills of Gurgan") is a city in southwestern Tajikistan. It is the capital of the Viloyati Khatlon region and it is located 100 km from Dushanbe. It is estimated that the population of the city might be close to 85,000 (est. 2006) people, making it the third-largest city in the country. Khatlon is a province of Tajikistan. ... Dushanbe (Душанбе), population 562,000 people (2000 census), is the capital of Tajikistan. ...


The city had a large number of ethnic Russians who were actively employed by the industrial and agricultural complexes in and around the city. The city has been serious demaged during the civil war (1992-1997). 85% of the Russians left the city during and after the civil war (1992-97).


Qurghonteppa International Airport serves a handful of cities and Russia and Kazakhstan. The city is considered as the heart of cotton ("white gold") cultivation in Tajikistan.


Qurghonteppa along with Kulob are the main cities of South Tajikistan. It is regional (one of top 4) hub for especially for Banking and Telecommunication industries.


Tajik immigrant workers (mostly employed in Russia) significantly contribute to local economy since early 2000s.

It is situated in the southwest of the country, between the Hissar range in the north and the Panj River in the south and borders on Afghanistan in the southeast and on Uzbekistan in the west.
Khatlon is informally divided into the Qurghonteppa region (Western Khatlon) – with the Kofarnihon and Vakhsh river valleys – and the Kulob region (Eastern Khatlon).
In Qurghonteppa the breakdown is 59 percent Tajiks, 32 percent Uzbeks and three percent Russian.
