High Wycombe has been home to Command Plans, Command Fire, Command Stats, Command Security (police), Command Regiment, Air Staff,, Command Logistics (Formally Command Supply), Command Org (Housed in the old Bomber Command building, Group Captain Org uses Bomber Harris' old office), Command PT&Ed (Physical Training & Education), PWHQ (Primary War Head Quarters) and SACEUR (Supreme Allied Commander Europe), CRE Airfields (Command Royal Engineers, Airfields).

RAF High Wycombe is also situated roughly three miles away from the centre of High Wycombe, the station is situated over three sites all providing some of the services a conventional RAF Station does to create a fully comprehensive RAF Station. RAF High Wycombe is a non-Flying station, it is simply Headquarters to the RAF's Strike Command, which is headed by Air Chief Marshal Sir Brian Burridge. The Station is not Commanded by an air ranking officer (Air Commodore and above) although almost half of the stations personnel consists of Air Ranking Officers; It is however usually commanded by a Wing Commander. The RAF was founded on April 1st, 1918 by the amalgamation of the Royal Flying Corps and the Royal Naval Air Service.
The primary role of the RAF in the Cold War years was the defence of Europe against potential attack by the Soviet Union.
RAF squadrons are somewhat analogous to the regiments of the British army, in that they have histories and traditions going back to their formation, regardless of where they are currently based, which aircraft they are operating, etc. They can be awarded standards and battle honours for meritorious service.
