Two different ocean liners of the Cunard Steamship Lines have been named RMS Laconia. Although one was launched ten years after the other, they are easily confused; they had similar careers and met similar fates.

  • The first Laconia was launched in 1911 and sunk by a U-boat in 1917.
  • The second Laconia was launched in 1921 and sunk by a U-boat in 1942.

The first Laconia was built by Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson[?], launched on July 27, 1911, delivered to the Cunard Line on December 12, 1911, and began service on January 20, 1912.
Laconia was turned into an armed merchant cruiser in 1914 and based at Simonstown in the South Atlantic, from which she patrolled until April 1915.
The second RMS Laconia was was built by Swan, Hunter and Wigham Richardson[?], launched on April 9, 1921, and made her maiden voyage on May 25, 1922 from Southampton to New York.

The second RMS Laconia was a Cunard ocean liner built by Swan, Hunter & Wigham Richardson as a successor to the Laconia of 1911 to 1917.
On September 24, 1934 Laconia was involved in a collision off the US coast, while traveling from Boston to New York in dense fog.
Laconia returned to New York for repairs, and resumed cruising in 1935.
