The Racing Rules of Sailing govern the conduct of yacht racing and dinghy racing. A new revision is published every four years by the International Sailing Federation, the world governing body for the sport. The current edition (2005–2008) came into effect on 1 January 2005. Sailboat racing is a self-policing sport. As stated by the Racing Rules of Sailing, "Competitors in the sport of sailing are governed by a body of rules that they are expected to follow and enforce. A fundamental principle of sportsmanship is that when competitors break a rule they will promptly take a penalty or retire." See [1]. Depending on the nature of the infraction, the penalty may be either (1) performing a turn consisting of one tack and one gybe or (2) performing two turns consisting of two tacks and two gybes. For most rules infractions, a competitor may absolve himself or herself from disqualification from the race by taking such a penalty. Tack is a term, that depending on its application has several different meanings. ... RACING RULES OF THE BARNEGAT BAY YRA (1470 words)
All races held under the jurisdiction of the Association shall be conducted by a Race Committee appointed by the Regatta Committee of the Association and chaired by the Vice Commodore.
A boat entered for a race must be the bona fide property of a recognized yacht club or of the person in whose name she is entered, who must be a member of a yacht club of the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association except as provided in paragraph B.5.
Sailing privileges in the Barnegat Bay Yacht Racing Association will be automatic if you a a member in good standing of a member yacht club which has contributed a sum to the association that represents a $5.00 fee for 90% or more of their membership.
