Encyclopedia > Radiation chemistry

Radiochemistry deals with the use of radioactivity to study ordinary chemical reactions. All elements emanate some form of radiation, and Radiochemistry is the field of Science that analyses those reactions based on radioactive emanations. Radiochemistry also includes the production of radionuclides and their compounds by processing irradiated or naturally occurring materials that have ostensible radioactive attributes. Radioactivity may mean: Look up radioactivity in Wiktionary, the free dictionary. ... A chemical reaction is a process involving one, two or more substances (called reactants), characterized by a chemical change and yielding one or more product(s) which are different from the reactants. ... A chemical element, often called simply element, is the class of atoms which contain the same number of protons. ... // What is science? There are various understandings of the word science. According to empiricism, scientific theories are objective, empirically testable, and predictive — they predict empirical results that can be checked and possibly contradicted. ... A radionuclide is an atom with an unstable nucleus. ...

Radiochemistry is more closely linked to nuclear chemistry, with the application of chemical techniques to nuclear studies and the application of radioactivity to the investigation of chemical and biochemical problems being a theatre of research paramount to it. A chemical substance is any material substance used in or obtained by a process in chemistry: A chemical compound is a substance consisting of two or more chemical elements that are chemically combined in fixed proportions. ... Biochemistry is the chemistry of life. ...
