Radio Days (4038 words)
The call letters were said to have been formed from the station's motto, "We're Ohio University Broadcasting." WOUB debuted in December 1942 in the crudely-partitioned balcony of the auditorium in Ewing Hall, then home to the theater department.
In 1949 a radio department was established as a separate unit in the School of Dramatic Art and Speech.
OU was slow to embrace the unsettling developments in radio, and unprepared to refocus on television, so in WOUB's Studio A sat an enormous radio sound effects console, on rollers, which contained all the traditional techniques for creating noises.
Tool Quest (2223 words)
Ham radio’s ranks have been thinning for decades, partly due to the difficulty of passing the code test, and partly due to young people’s fascination with computers.
The radio amplifies the antenna’s output just a bit, and then dumps it into a mixer, where it’s added to a simple sine wave (produced by what’s called a “local oscillator”) near the frequency of the station you’d like to hear.
Then build what is essentially a radio front-end to mix perhaps a 90 MHz sine wave with the signals, amplify it as much as is needed, and then mix the result down to a low frequency suitable for processing by the system’s A/D converter.
