Communist rule
Under communist rule, the English-language external service was broadcast on the same mediumwave wavelength as BBC Radio 1 - 247 metres (1214KHz). The service was renamed "Radio One Tirana" to use this coincidence to the Albanian state's advantage. The service broadcast propaganda, "news" and commentary aimed at young listeners in the UK and Ireland read by announcers who were expelled or resigned one time members of the Communist Party of Great Britain. This service had the added advantage of swamping signals from the BBC's popular music service that may have reached Albania. One feature was "Frank and Ernest", which listed the "crimes" of the US government and the "collaboration" of the UK therein. One preferred angle was to list, in some detail, the wanton and perverted private behaviour of the American First Lady behind her husband's back. Whilst this may have had an effect on some listeners, it appears that the majority found the Radio Tirana output to be either very funny or an unwanted distraction from the BBC service. Radio One Tirana also provided weather forecasts that, for various reasons, were designed to be innaccurate and thus disrupt economic activity in the UK.
