The Radio Tower Gliwice is the transmission tower of the radio station Gliwice (Gleiwitz), situated at 50°19' N and 18°41' E at the Tarnowitzer Road in Gliwice. It is a 118 metre high construction of lerch wood framework and after the demolition of the wood radio tower of Ismaning on March 16th, 1983 perhaps the only wood-built transmission tower in the world. The Radio Tower Gliwice is perhaps the tallest construction of wood in the world. It is designed to carry aerials for mediumwave broadcasting, but the transmitter is not in service any more. The Radio Tower Gliwice was built in 1935 in order to replace the former smaller transmitter of Gliwice situated at the Raudener Street. It went in service on December 23rd, 1935. On August 31st, 1939 the Attack on Gleiwitz radio station took place. The transmission facility was not demolihed in World War II. From October 4th, 1945 until the inaugauration of the new transmitter in Ruda Śląska in 1955 the transmitter Gliwice was used for medium wave broadcasting of the Polish Broadcasting Company. After 1955 the transmitter was used as jammer against medium wave transmitters radiating Polish programmes, e.g. Radio Free Europe. Nowadays the Radio Tower Gliwice carries multiple transmission aerials for mobile phone services.
