The Raid of Fort Oswego was a successful British raid on a American fort and a village in May 1814.
The British, in this half naval-half land battle landed on Oswego at 2.00pm and started a long and slow yet deadly assualt on the American village. The Royal Marines had an unfortunate landing due to the fact their ammunition was ruined and destroyed due to water exposure and was only able to affix their bayonets and charge the American troops under very heavy fire; but was successful yet exhausting. At the same time their was a second lading attmept which was much more successful. The seamen and marines instantly rallied and charged across and into the American battery instantly achieving thier objectives as their managed to destroy any resistance even under heavy fire.
By this time George Mitchell, the American commander realised that the whole of the fort was being invaded and that his soldiers weas eventually being overpowered and defeated and decided to withdraw and retreat into the forests where the Britsh chased them.
