A raigō(来迎,raigō?) ("welcoming approach") is an appearance of AmidaBuddha on a purple cloud at the time of one's death. It has given rise to a type of Japanese painting (a raigō-zu) of a Buddha accompanied by bodhisattvas. As a ritual, such a painting is carried into the house of a person who is near death. Amida Nyorai (Buddha) sits in the center and is attended by the Seishi Bosatsu (Mahasthamaprapta) on the right and Kannon Bosatsu (Avalokitesvara) on the left.
These images are called Raigo, with Amida usually seated in the center with an attendant on either side.
Scenes of the Amida Raigo Triad riding clouds, crossing mountains, and flying through the wind were easy to express through the medium of painting, but many difficulties arose when trying to express such scenes through sculpture.
Raigo was often beaten up and as the sequel to physical punishment he was sent out of doors to be freezing.
Raigo stayed with his step-father and traveled with him about Estonian theatres, putting up for the nights in hotels, hostels and theatre dressing rooms.
