FACTOID # 77: Moldova has one of the smallest artillery forces in Europe, and the highest rate in the world of death by powered lawnmower. Coincidence? Surely not.

Encyclopedia > Railing

Railing when used in an architectural application can refer to either a handrailing or a guard railing.

A handrailing is in place to provide guidance on stairs or in corridors. A guard railing is in place to prevent accidental falls from an elevated area.

Depending on applicable building codes, handrail is generally located between 34" and 38" above a surface or stair tread. The codes also dictate handrail shape with many codes now requiring that a handrail be between 1-1/4" and 2" diameter or provide an equivalent gripping surface -- perimeter dimension between 4-1/4" and 6-1/4" with a maximum cross section of 2-1/2". Clearance between the wall and handrail should be a minimum of 1-1/2".

Guard rail is generally required when thereis a minimum 30" drop. The guard should be 42" in height with no opening in the rail being greater than 4". There are no size limitations for the top of a guard rail but if a handrail is required, it must meet the dimensional and height requirements noted above.

Rail tracks - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (2138 words)
Rail tracks are normally laid on a bed of coarse stone chippings known as ballast, which combines resilience, some amount of flexibility, and good drainage; however, track can also be laid on or into concrete (this is called slab track).
After new segments of rail are laid, or defective rails replaced (welded in), the rails are artificially heated so that they expand (this is called stressing), they are then fastened (clipped) to the sleepers in their expanded form.
Joints are used in continuously welded rail when necessary; instead of a joint that passes straight across the rail, producing a loud noise and shock when the wheels pass over it, two sections of rail are cut at a steep angle and put together with a gap between them (a breather switch).
