Railroad is a borough located in York County, Pennsylvania. As of the 2000 census, the borough had a total population of 300.


Geography

Railroad is located at 39°45'24" North, 76°41'58" West (39.756761, -76.699396)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 1.6 km˛ (0.6 mi˛). 1.6 km˛ (0.6 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 300 people, 112 households, and 79 families residing in the borough. The population density is 183.9/km˛ (478.7/mi˛). There are 116 housing units at an average density of 71.1/km˛ (185.1/mi˛). The racial makeup of the borough is 96.33% White, 1.67% African American, 2.00% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.00% from two or more races. 0.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 112 households out of which 41.1% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.1% are married couples living together, 12.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.6% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.68 and the average family size is 3.16.


In the borough the population is spread out with 29.0% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 33.7% from 25 to 44, 20.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 98.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.8 males.


The median income for a household in the borough is $37,917, and the median income for a family is $47,813. Males have a median income of $29,286 versus $25,417 for females. The per capita income for the borough is $16,709. 4.7% of the population and 1.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 16.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Pennsylvania Railroad class E6s Atlantic (4-4-2) #460 and class D16sb American (4-4-0) #1223.
1223 was restored to operating condition in 1965 and operated on the Strasburg Railroad with 7002 as late as 1989.

The system opened in 1834, consisting of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad from Philadelphia west to Columbia on the Susquehanna River, a canal from Columbia to Hollidaysburg, the Allegheny Portage Railroad from Hollidaysburg to Johnstown, and another canal from Johnstown to the terminus in Pittsburgh.
The Union Railroad opened on July 24, 1873, eliminating the transfer, and the PRR contracted with the Union Railroad and the PWandB.
The original Pennsylvania Station was designed to be a replica of the Baths of Caracalla; it was notable for its enormous railshed and infamous demolition in the railroad's waning years.
