Born in Bochnia, Poland on January 27, 1861 to Gustav Sinnmayer Modrzejewski and actress Helena Modrzejewska. His father died in 1865 and in 1868 his mother married Count Bozenta Chlapowski. Together they immigrated to America in July, 1876, where his mother changed her name to "Helena Modjeska" and her son's name to "Ralph Modjeski". Modjeski returned to Europe to study at " "L'Ecole des Ponts et Chaussees" in Paris, France, where he graduated in 1885 at the top of his class. He married the same year, to Felicie Benda (the couple had three children). He later married Virginia Mary Giblyn. Bochnia is a town in south-eastern Poland with 30,000 inhabitants (2001), situated in the Lesser Poland Voivodship but previously in the Tarnow Voivodship (1975-1998). ... Ralph Modjeski (Rudolf Modrzejewski) was born on January 27,1861 in Bochnia, in the Galicja area of Poland, during a time when Poland was divided among the partitioning powers of Austria, Prussia, and Russia.
Modjeski later remarked that the American was actually a Pole, the Canadian was French, and the Englishman was Scotch.
