Governor Rameshwar Thakur, born in Thakur Gangti village in Godda district of Jharkhand took charge in November 2004. A qualified chartered accountant, the 78-year-old Thakur actively participated in Quit India Movement in 1942. He remained underground nearly six months in Raj Mahal Hills in Santhal Parganas and was later arrested and detained in Central Jail, Calcutta in 1946 in connection with the national movement. Shri Thakur has occupied various important and prestigious positions from time to time. They include Director of Unit Trust of India(4 years), Director of Export Credit and Guarantee Corporation(3 years), Director of Punjab National Bank (1978-82) and Director of Punjab, Haryana and Delhi Chambers of Commerce(3 years). He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in April 1984 and again in April, 1990. He was Union Minister for Finance (Revenue), Rural Development and Parliamentary Affairs between June 1991 and December 1994. Now he whiles away his time in the sprawling Raj Bhawan tending the garden and occasionally whipping a meal for his wife.
