Rana Sangha, also known as Sangram Singh, was the rana (king) of Mewar, in present-day Rajasthan state of western India, from 1509 to 1527. He brought Mewar to the peak of its prosperity and prominence, establishing it as the premier Rajput state. Rana Sangha encouraged the Mughal chief Babur to challenge the last Sultan of Delhi, Ibrahim Lodi. Babur defeated Ibrahim in April 1526 at the First Battle of Panipat. Instead of retreating from the summer heat of the Indian lowlands as expected, Babur stayed, and in February 1527 Rana Sangha led a combined Rajput force of over 200,000 men to drive Babur away. Rana Sangha's army engaged the Mughal force at the Battle of Khanua; after a day-long battle, Rana Sangha was betrayed by a Tomara Rajput general, which tipped the battle to a victory for Babur, a fact confirmed by Colonol Tod a British historian from the age of the British Raj.
