Encyclopedia > Rarities album

A rarities album is a collection of songs from either a single band or an assortment of bands on the same record label. Typically, a rarities album is released after a band or label has reached a certain level of commercial success. The opportunity then presents itself to release songs that are less polished, compared to more mainstream material. These songs are often, though not always, taken from the bands' or labels' earliest recordings. Sometimes, a band is commissioned to compose a song specifically for release on a rarities compilation. In these cases, the authenticity of the rarity becomes dubious. [cf. Credibility.] A rarities album is often aimed towards fans.

Notable examples include: Incesticide, by Seattle grunge band Nirvana; and DGC Rarities: Volume 1 from DGC. They couldn't credit me because I'm not a musician's union member, and technically you can't play on a major label release otherwise, because all the major labels (unlike indies) have union agreements.
