Encyclopedia > Raul Koczalski

Raul Koczalski, a Polish pianist who is relatively obscure today, was arguably the greatest interpreter of Chopin, and one of the greatest pianists of his time.

His only teacher was Karl Mikuli, Chopin's favorite Polish student and assistant, and he is considered the last heir of the authentic Chopin tradition. Some say the same of the French pianist Alfred Cortot who, while indisputably an equally great if not the greatest ever Chopinist, has only a dubious link to Chopin through Decombes.
