Born in Denton, Texas, as a boy he had to overcome polio. Blessed with a 4 octave singing voice, he idolized the vocal sounds of fellow Texan, Roy Orbison. Peterson moved to Los Angeles, California where he was signed by RCA Victor Records in 1957. He recorded several songs that were minor hits until "The Wonder of You" made it into the Billboard Top Thirty list. Peterson accepted an offer by Norman Granz to be "planted"in the audience at a "Jazz At The Philharmonic"presentation at Carnegie Hall on September 18, 1949.
In 1951, Oscar Peterson formed The Oscar Peterson Trio with Ray Brown and Charlie Smith who was replaced by Herb Ellis in 1952 and recorded and toured extensively with Jazz At The Philharmonic.
Peterson has won numerous awards and accolades during his career including a Juno and ve Grammy awards, was inducted into the Juno Hall of Fame in 1978 and was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Grammy in 1997.
