Red beds are strata of sedimentary rock that are red due to the presence of iron oxides. The layers are composed primarily of sandstone, siltstone, and shale. Many red beds were formed during the Jurassic and Triassic periods. Red beds have economic significance since many of them contain reservoirs of petroleum and natural gas. The German subdivisions of the Bunter are as follows;(i) Upper Buntsandslein, or Rot, mottled red and green mans and ~lays with occasional beds of shale, sandstone, gypsum, rocksaft md dolomite.
In the Vosges district, this subdivision of the Bunter is called the Grs des Vosges, or the Gre-s principal, which comprises: (1.) red micaceous and argillaceous sandstone; (ii.) the conglomirat principal; and (iii.) Grs bigarre principal (=grs des Vosges, properly so-called).
In Germany some of the harder beds have yielded building stones, which were much used in the middle ages in the construction of cathedrals and castles in southern Germany and on the Rhine.
