This article is about a non-alcoholic coffee beverage. For other uses, see Red eye. Red eye or Redeye may have one of the following meanings: In geography: Red Eye Township, Minnesota, a place in the United States, located along the Redeye River. ...

A red eye is a cup of filter coffee to which one shot of espresso has been added. The red eye has many monikers, depending on the region. In the midwest, a red eye is known as a depth charge. In parts of the South, the drink is called a shot in the dark or shotgun. It is very commonly known as a "sledgehammer" or "hammerhead", particularly in California (the former particularly in the Bay Area). It also has countless unique names coined by individual coffeeshops, particularly in areas where coffee jargon is less well-known.

While they both contain espresso, a red eye should not be confused with an americano, which is made with hot water rather than drip coffee. The red eye shares the americano's powdery, intense espresso taste, but with the added taste of the coffee, and much more caffeine. Americano (also café américano) is a style of coffee prepared by adding hot water to espresso, giving a similar strength but different flavor than regular drip coffee. ...
