History

For much of the school's history it was the only public high school for the cities, Redlands, ,Loma Linda, Yucaipa, and Highland. Today it is one of four high schools in the district and still includes students from all the cities. The population was split in 1997 when Redlands East Valley High School opened. As for the ethnic distribution of the school, 43% is classified as White (not Hispanic), 30% Hispanic or Latino, 12% Asian, 9% African American, 4% Filipino, .9% Native American or Alaskan Native, .7% Pacific Islander, and 4% other or not classified. The third high school is Redlands Citrus Valley High School, which is set to open 2009, and a Continuation school,Orangewood High School. Publications

Newspaper

The "Hobachi" is official Redlands High Schools newspaper which is compiled by the Hobachi class. The "Hobachi" is issued once a month, and includes topics such as: sports, education, teacher profiles, student profiles, current events, etc. It is free to the students because it is sponsored by many firms around the Redlands area. It is also usually almost in full color, and includes pictures of the student body. Students are interviewed at the nearing of the end of the school year for positions such as writing staff, editors, photography, etc. It is also known as "the echo of Redlands High School." The Hobachi is an award-winning newspaper, winning several gallup awards every year as well as placing high on the scholastic high school newspaper evaluation.[citation needed]


Yearbook

The "Makio" is the Redlands High School yearbook, which has had 102 volumes to the 2005-2006 school year. "Makio" has won gold in yearbook competitions, and was recently featured as one of the publisher's best yearbooks, along with another from California, and another from Colorado. The yearbook ranges from around $65 from the beginning of the school year, to $100 at the end of the school year. Also like the "Hobachi", students are interviewed for positions in three categories: business, staff that is dedicated to selling advertisements to businesses around the area; copy, staff that is dedicated to writing the entries in the yearbook; photography, staff that is dedicated to taking the pictures that are featured in the yearbook. Also, there are positions for editors for each section on the yearbook. The editors consist of Editor In Chief, Sports Editor, Business Editor, Copy Editor, Senior Editors, Organizations Editor, Senior Ads Editor, Photography Editor, Public Relations Editor, Layout Editor, and Underclassmen/Faculty Editor. The editors are chosen by the class advisor; editor in chief must have a minimum of at least one year of editor, and is recommended be in the Makio class since freshmen year. There is an interview process in which student must be interviewed for all staffs of the class. Current students of the Makio must also re-apply to ensure that all students have an equal opportunity at getting the position of their liking. There are usually 7-8 students per staff, not including the editor, on Business, Photography, Senior Ad, and Copy Staff.


Literary Journal

A literary journal has been in existence at Redlands High School for some years and is put together by the 'Writer's Block', the writing club of RHS. During the 2005-2006 school year, the book "Shades of Grey" was published, exhibiting the many various students' artistic, poetic, and linguistic abilities, although its generally ignored by the general school populace. The literary journal for the 2006-2007 school year was titled "Seasons".

The Friday Show

The "Friday Show" is a show that is put together by the Advanced Multimedia class, also known as the "Digital Dogz," which airs every Friday. It includes student profiles, lunch time, free time, and teacher profiles. It also used to include an animated skit called "Ruff and Scruff", it referred to the rivalry between Redlands High School and Redlands East Valley High School. The show runs during 4th period throughout the entire school on the local cable system.
