Reggina Calcio is the main football club of the Italian city of Reggio Calabria, Calabria. It was founded in 11 January 1914 as "Unione Sportiva Reggio Calabria". In recent years, Reggina has been alternating between the top two levels of the Italian league. It reached the Italian first division Serie A for the first time in 1999. Two years later, it lost a relegation playoff against Hellas Verona and dropped to Serie B. Reggina finished third in Serie B in 2002, earning a return to Serie A. Reggina for a long period of time, have been fierce rivals with neighbours Messina, who are just a 15 minute ferry ride away from each other. Two times every season they clash in the 'Derby dello Stretto' (Derby of the straits). Over the last few years battles have been close with Reggina having a slight advantage in victories.


Reggina were recently indicted for sporting fraud as part of the second wave of Calciopoli investigations. The trial began on August 13, 2006. FIGC's Stefano Palazzi asked to relegate the club to Serie B with a 15-point deduction. On August 17, 2006, Italy's football tribunal reached a verdict that Reggina would remain in Serie A for the 06-07 season, but with a 15-point deduction. [1] Reggina appealed the decision, and on December 12, 2006, it was reduced to 11 points[2]. The 2006 Serie A scandal (sometimes referred to as Calciocaos or Calciopoli[1]) involved major match fixing in Italys top professional football league, Serie A. Despite the heavy deduction of points, Reggina managed to save from relegation, defeating newly-crowned UEFA Champions League winners AC Milan on the final matchday and ending the season with 40 points (including the deduction), just one single point above the third relegation spot, occupied by Chievo.
