The Reliance Building is the first skyscraper to have large plate glass windows make up the majority of its surface area; forshadowing a feature of skyscrapers that would become dominant in the 20th century. The first four floors were erected in 1890, the addition of ten floors in 1894–1895, completed the building and marked the "first comprehensive achievement[1]" of the Chicago construction method. The building designed by Charles B. Atwood and E.C. Shankland, the latter of Daniel H. Burnham's architectural firm; now houses the Hotel Burnham or Burnham Hotel. Taipei 101, considered the worlds tallest skyscraper. ... The main legislative framework for the Building Society was the Building Society Act of 1874, with subsequent amending legislation in 1894, 1939 (see Coney Hall), and 1960.
In their heyday, there were hundreds of building societies: just about every town in the country had a building society named after that town.
Building societies, in the classic form, were mutual organisations, jointly owned by those saving and borrowing.
The Reliance Building. Chicago, Illinois (445 words)
The Reliance building, listed on the National Register of Historic Places since January of 1970 and designated a Chicago landmark building since July of 1995 is often credited with being the forefather of the modern glass and steel skyscraper.
Architectural historians lavish it with accolades for it’s pioneering building style and sometimes give it the title of the being the first building to use what became known as Chicago construction, that of an internal steel frame to which the exterior walls are attached.
The Reliance building, revered in thought and words was in reality nearly devoid of tenants and slowly falling apart.
