Construction of Reliant Arena originated in the early 1970s and completed in 1974 adjacent to the Astrohall. Although the Astrohall (renamed Reliant Hall temporarily) was its next door neighbor, it was demolished in May 2002 to make way for a parking lot when Reliant Stadium was being completed. In 2005, the Arena was used to house refugees from Hurricane Katrina, along with other parts of Reliant Park, and was the site of the field clinic set up to care for those refugees. The Reliant Arena, formerly the "Astroarena", is a 350,000 square feet (33,000 m²) sports center in Reliant Park, in Houston, Texas.
The Reliant Arena used to be the home of several different local secondary-league sports teams, including the Houston Aeros of the IHL, the Houston Hotshots, and the Texas Terror and Houston Thunderbears of the Arena Football League.
In 2005, the Arena was used to house refugees from Hurricane Katrina after it was deemed that the Astrodome would be insufficient for comfortably housing over 30,000 refugees.

The Astrodome (and Reliant Park in general) gained nationwide notoriety in September 2005 when it was opened as a massive shelter for evacuees fleeing Hurricane Katrina.
Reliant Stadium was also the home of Super Bowl XXXVIII (held February 1, 2004), famous for the New England Patriots defeating the Carolina Panthers 32-29, but also infamous for its halftime show incident involving Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction".
