This makes the matter of remuneration and expenses for elected States members one of the most difficult and controversial subjects that the Privileges and Procedures Committee is required to consider in accordance with its terms of reference.
Granting suitable remuneration to elected States members would enable a greater number of candidates to stand, resulting ultimately in an Assembly that in its variety and balance is truly representative of the people of Jersey.
This corresponds to the remuneration paid to ‘middle managers’ in the civil service and is believed to strike the appropriate balance in relation to the two extremes referred to in paragraph 5.1.
