Trade: Another term for Ruggiero? (1768 words)
In such an event, it was suggested, incumbent Renato Ruggiero, whose terms (along with that of his deputies) expires on 30 April, may be asked to continue, but that Ruggiero would want a specific term.
When Ruggiero was chosen in 1995, it was on the specific basis that he would have one fixed 4-year term, and not seek a second term, and that his successor would be from outside Europe (with developing countries at that time believing this meant it would be a Third World person).
Initially, in announcing his retirement and inviting the WTO General Council to select a successor, Ruggiero had indicated he would be happy if a successor could be named by end of the month, and in effect suggesting he would even leave earlier than 30 April.
PRESS BRIEFING BY ITALTIAN MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS (499 words)
Ruggiero said.  The Security Council was considering a draft resolution that called for binding commitments.  Further, he said, great attention would also be given to the signature and ratification of the 12 United Nations treaties that address terrorism, especially the twelfth convention that dealt with its financing.
Ruggiero said he did not feel that governments had been tolerant of such groups.  Italians knew, because of their history, how important it was to fight against extremist behavior.
Ruggiero said the trip had actually been planned before the 11 September attacks and the scope of the visit would not likely change.  Italy shared a traditional relationship with Iran.  They also shared the belief that it was important to "join forces and beat something that all of us consider a danger".
