History

It was founded in 1744 by the bandeirante Simão da Cunha Gago and was called Nossa Senhora da Conceição do Campo Alegre da Paraíba Nova (Our Lady of the Joyful Field of New Paraíba). The Indians Puri called it Timburibá. On September 29, 1801 it was renamed Resende, after the act of 13th vice-regent of Brazil and 2nd Count of Resende, General José Luís de Castro.
