Revell was a company originally founded in 1943, in Venice, California. After four decades as the number one plastic model maker in the world and many years of marginal profitability, Revell was purchased by Odyssey Partners of New York and folded into the Monogram Models Company of Morton Grove, Il. which Odyssey had purchased earlier that year. Its plant was closed in Venice, California and all its its usable assets were transfered to Monogram's De Plaines, Iowa Number 2 plant. The new company is now based in based in Northbrook, Illinois, United States, it manufactures a broad range of plastic and die-cast models of cars, aircraft, military vehicles and ships. Due to Revell's prolific world wide name recognition, Revell has become the primary brand name used on many of its kit lines. This has lead to the humorous nickname "Revellogram" among the model building community. Revell kits always had a reputation among modelers for inconsistent design and quality.[citation needed] Its major American competitors in the plastic model kit market include AMT-Ertl, Lindberg, and Testors. Revell Germany

In 1956, the German subsidiary, Revell Plastics GmbH, was founded in Bünde, West Germany. During the 1970s, this company started developing and manufacturing its own independent lines of model kits outside the direct control of Revell, USA. These models are imported into the United States, and also have a reputation for very high quality. Later known as Revell AG, the company is now called Revell GmbH & Co. KG, and although it is a wholly owned subsidiary its marketing and product development divisions operate independently of Revell-Monogram.
