Reykjanes - definition of Reykjanes in Encyclopedia (182 words)
The peninsula Reykjanes (also known under the name Reykjaneskagi) is situated at the south-west end of Iceland not far from the capital Reykjavík.
Reykjanes, meaning the fuming area, is marked by the active volcanism under its surface.
The earth is actually "fuming" or emitting vapour of different kinds, at the hot springs and sulphur springs in the south of Reykjanes, around the Kleifarvatn and Krýsuvík.
Reykjanes Ridge Seismology (3031 words)
The overall character of the Reykjanes Ridge is strongly influenced by the Iceland Plume.
OBS deployments along the northern Reykjanes Ridge (near 62.5 N) (Mochizuki et al., 2000) have detected numerous, mostly normal faulting events that occur on the flanks between the AVS's (implying that they are probably not associated with magmatism).
Reykjanes Ridge, in being fairly linear, provides a place to investigate the along-axis variability of upwelling (and melt production) that is not dominated by the overwhelming geometrical and thermal effects of fracture zone offsets.
