The Skimmers are a small family of tern-like birds in the order Charadriiformes, which also includes the waders, gulls and auks.
The three species have an elongated lower mandible. They feed by flying low over the water surface with the lower mandible skimming the water for small fish.
They are tropical species which lay 3-6 eggs on sandy beaches. The female incubates the eggs.
I have been lucky to be literally feet from a soaring albatross or two while out at sea in the far South Atlantic and got several days of constant close up observation, and you never forget it and this makes me very lucky indeed as long-line fishermen have decimated Albatross populations in recent years.
Seabird species include the Skuas Stercoraracidae GullsLaridaeTernsSternidae Skimmers Rhynchopidae Sheathbill Chionididae and Auks Alcidae.
There are so many sea birds and watching them fish on schools of fish is amazing to watch.
