Reid was first elected to the Alberta legislature in the 1921 election when the UFA was first elected.
By the time Reid took office in 1934, the UFA government had become very conservative, and was at odds with the United Farmers of Alberta executive who had decided to support the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation and its socialist policies.
Reid's party was unable to maintain the support of voters and was swept from office in the 1935 election by William Aberhart's Social Credit party.
