Richland is a city located in Stewart County, Georgia. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 1,794.


Geography

Richland is located at 32°5'19" North, 84°39'50" West (32.088663, -84.663752)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.9 km² (4.2 mi²). 10.8 km² (4.2 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.48% water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,794 people, 624 households, and 413 families residing in the city. The population density is 165.7/km² (429.3/mi²). There are 716 housing units at an average density of 66.1/km² (171.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 35.95% White, 62.54% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. 2.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 624 households out of which 29.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 35.6% are married couples living together, 27.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.8% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 3.15.


In the city the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.4% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 22.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 85.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.2 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $24,597, and the median income for a family is $29,423. Males have a median income of $26,313 versus $17,269 for females. The per capita income for the city is $14,127. 23.8% of the population and 17.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 30.1% of those under the age of 18 and 25.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
