Plot Spoiler warning: Plot and/or ending details follow. Magician describes the adventures of a young man (Pug) and his friend (Tomas) during the Riftwar. Early on in the book, invaders from another world known as Kelewan invade through portals known as "rifts". The invaders, a warlike folk known as the Tsurani, start a 9-year war, which is known as the Riftwar. Pug and Tomas stay together for the first half of the book, but they are split up by a mishap, which leads to Pug eventually being captured by the Tsurani, and spending four years on their home planet - Kelewan as a slave. He is discovered to possess magical powers, becomes a Tsurani Magician, and receives the new name "Milamber". After trying to fit into the Tsurani culture, he eventually realises it is far too different, and - following his destruction of the "Imperial Games" (similar to the Gladiatorial Games of the Colosseum in Ancient Rome) - he returns to his homeworld with his wife and young son and plays a key-role in the destruction of the Rift. The third protagonist, Arutha ConDoin, son of Duke Borric of Crydee (from where both Pug and Tomas originate), travels to the capital of the Kingdom in order to summon the troops needed to defeat the Tsurani. However, instead of the hoped-for aid, he finds that the current king, Rodric the Fourth, has gone insane, and flees back to fight the Tsurani. The rift is closed in a violent way after the sorcerer - Macros the Black - tricks the elves and Tomas into thinking that the Tsurani (brought to the Peace Table after the destruction of the Games) in fact are plotting treason. King Rodric has already died in the last great conflict against the Tsurani, and Lyam, Arutha's older brother, is named heir to the throne. Look up Sorcerer in Wiktionary, the free dictionary. ...

Murad has the power to raise the dead and makes corpses do battle with the living. He is acting on the advice of a prophesy that mentions a person known as the "Lord of the West". When an assassin misses his target and instead fells his bride on her wedding day with a deadly poison, Arutha must travel beyond the border to a strange place inhabited by the Moredhel, or "Brothers of the Dark Path". There he has to find Silverthorn, the antidote to the poison his wife has been felled with. In addition, Pug is forced to return to Kelewan to see if the Tsurani can shed any light on the Silverthorn mystery. After his destruction of the "Imperial Games" in Magician, Pug/Milamber is now a wanted man and is arrested and imprisoned. He uses the magical powers that gained on Midkemia as opposed to the ones he learned on Kelewan - as he is held by magical powers that cannot defend themselves against Pugs' Midkemian magic. At the end of the novel, Pug goes to the northern polar regions of Kelewan and finds a people long thought dead. He is told he will learn from them for around a year...
