Riga Polytechnicum was first established in 1862 and was the first polytechnical institute in Imperial Russia. It offered degrees in agriculture, chemistry, engineering, mechanics, trade and architecture, with education in German language. In 1896, it was renamed Riga Polytechnical Institute and the language of instruction was changed to Russian.
When the World War I started in 1914, Riga Polytechnical Institute was evacuated to Moscow and worked there until 1918. After that, part of the faculty returned to Latvia and joined the newly established University of Latvia. Others stayed in Russia and taught at universities there.
Riga Technical University, 1958-now
Riga Polytechnical Institute was re-established in 1958 by splitting off the engineering departments from University of Latvia. In 1990, it was renamed to Riga Technical University. The university currently consists of 8 faculties:

John McLeod obtained a BS in Engineering at Tulane University, with additional courses at University of Chicago, Harvard, and MIT.
He also acted as co-founder of the San Diego Symposium for Biomedical Engineering, and edited the proceedings of the first symposium, held in 1961.
From 1963 to 1974, he served as Editor of SIMULATION, the technical journal of The Society for Computer Simulation, during which period he received the Electronic Associates Senior Scientific Simulation Award.

From 1946 through 1963 he was the colleague of the scientific and technical committee for main rocket- artillery management MO SSSR - Ministry of Defense of the USSR.
For the creation of the large hierarchical automatic systems for the special-purpose control with the unique characteristics on the reliability, the readiness factor, authenticity of calculations academician Sarkisyan with the coauthors became the two-fold laureate of the State Prize of the USSR (1981).
