Rio Bravo is a city located in Webb County, Texas, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,553.


Geography

Rio Bravo is located at 27°21'53" North, 99°28'46" West (27.364817, -99.479349)1.


According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²). 1.8 km² (0.7 mi²) of it is land and 1.45% is water.


Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 5,553 people, 1,204 households, and 1,122 families residing in the city. The population density is 3,153.0/km² (8,153.4/mi²). There are 1,347 housing units at an average density of 764.8/km² (1,977.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 78.61% White, 0.34% African American, 0.99% Native American, 0.02% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 16.62% from other races, and 3.40% from two or more races. 97.69% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.


There are 1,204 households out of which 70.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 74.1% are married couples living together, 15.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 6.8% are non-families. 6.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 2.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 4.61 and the average family size is 4.82.


In the city the population is spread out with 45.8% under the age of 18, 12.3% from 18 to 24, 25.8% from 25 to 44, 12.0% from 45 to 64, and 4.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 20 years. For every 100 females there are 96.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.3 males.


The median income for a household in the city is $17,149, and the median income for a family is $17,513. Males have a median income of $14,265 versus $12,222 for females. The per capita income for the city is $4,566. 57.6% of the population and 53.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 64.1% of those under the age of 18 and 55.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

The Rio Grande (called the Río Bravo or, more formally, the Río Bravo del Norte in Mexico) is a river that rises in the San Juan Mountains of Colorado, flows through the San Luis Valley, then south into New Mexico through Albuquerque and Las Cruces to El Paso, Texas, on the Mexican border.
Use of the water of the Rio Grande is regulated by the Rio Grande Compact, an interstate pact between Colorado, New Mexico and Texas; and a treaty between the United States and Mexico.
The Rio Grande rises in high mountains and flows for much of its length at high elevation; El Paso is 1147 m (3762 feet) above sea level.
